Nothing brings out the awkward in me quite like needing to ask for help. The constant pull of a heart and soul that fights having to need anything. Ever.
I’m reminded of words I shared some time ago that are still very true for me. Maybe they’re true for you, too.
I’ve spent most of my life thinking that my awkwardness was something I needed to fix. A flaw that should be corrected. Being awkward or feeling awkward were things that must be hidden at all costs.
It’s crazy, the things we’ll do to give the impression that we’ve got it all figured out.
We know we’re not perfect, yet when things happen that cause us to show glimpses of what we don’t know:
our lack of expertise
our lack of ease or grace
something that causes embarrassment
a situation that isn’t easy to handle or deal with
We fight to keep our missteps hidden at all costs.
Awkward hurts our pride. I’m learning that might be a good thing, though.
I heard it said on a podcast a while back that awkwardness was a spiritual gift. It was the first time I’d heard awkward described in a positive way. If my awkwardness is part of fearfully and wonderfully made me, then I guess it’s a gift I can and should share with others.
Walking in my awkwardness - without hiding, trying to play it off, or making excuses - gives others permission to walk in their awkward, too.
I can take steps of faith into the awkward of others. Invite them to stay, and be a safe place for their awkward to land.
Awkward does not equal broken.
Awkward isn’t something I need to overcome.
Until next time,
Becky
